The technical reality: Tea and coffee are highly volatile products that lose quality from moisture, oxygen, light, heat, and absorbed odours. Failure 1 — Moisture Absorption: Tea's Silent Quality Killer
Tea is hygroscopic — it actively absorbs moisture. Green tea exposed to humidity above 60% RH begins oxidising within days. White tea and silver needle absorb moisture through the natural hair structure of the leaf. Herbal blends with fruit pieces experience sugar dissolution and clumping.

Failure 2 — Odour Absorption: The Problem Nobody Mentions
Tea is among the most odour-absorptive substances in CPG. It readily absorbs smells from the tube's paper shell, seam adhesive, outer coating, and retail storage environment. For premium tea brands, any packaging-derived off-note destroys the product experience.
Test: Fill 3 sample tubes with silver needle white tea. Seal and store 14 days. Zero off-note tolerance.
Failure 3 — CO₂ Degassing: The Freshly Roasted Coffee Problem
Freshly roasted coffee actively releases CO₂ for days to weeks post-roast. In a sealed tube without ventilation, CO₂ buildup causes pressure accumulation that deforms or bursts the paper seam. A one-way degassing valve allows CO₂ to escape without allowing oxygen in — preserving freshness while preventing structural failure.

The liner decision determines shelf life. Choosing by product category alone is insufficient — you must match liner to the specific tea variety or coffee roast profile.

Within 24 hours, CO₂ release is at its peak. Without a degassing valve, the tube seam will deform or the lid will eject. Specify a lid with a one-way valve rated for peak CO₂ output. Alternatively, allow 48–72 hours post-roast degassing before packaging — but this sacrifices the freshness window.
"We sell green tea at £18–£25 per tube. What liner is non-negotiable?"
Aluminium foil laminate with metal-crimped lid. At that price point, any barrier compromise is a brand credibility risk, not just a product quality issue. Your customer is paying for provenance and freshness — the packaging must protect both without compromise.
"We want to make a compostable claim on our tea tube. What does that actually require?"
PLA or WBBC liner + FSC paperboard + water-based inks + compostable lid. Certification required: EN 13432 (EU) or ASTM D6400 (US). Note: industrial compostable ≠ home compostable. For green tea, PLA may be insufficient as a long-term moisture barrier — check whether a PLA + aluminium hybrid would compromise the compostability claim.
"We sell both tea and coffee. Can we use the same tube specification?"
Only for black tea and whole bean coffee — both have moderate barrier requirements that PE liner + metal push-fit lid satisfies. Green tea needs foil that's overkill for coffee. Ground coffee needs a degassing valve unnecessary for tea. Practical solution: two specs — foil-lined for green tea and ground coffee; PE-lined for black tea and whole beans.
